The Baron Winds Wind Farm, owned by RWE Clean Energy LLC, is a 121.8 MW wind farm located in Steuben County, New York, and is comprised of 32 wind turbines, including 8 SGRE 114 2.625MW turbines and 24 V150 4.2MW turbines. Three different foundations designs were included in the design finalization.
Scope of Work
The project includes the BOP Civil Scope, including access roads, turbine erection and turbine foundations. The major project components include:
57,000 LF of roadway.
Earthwork scope is 300,000 CY of cut to fill and 120,000 CY of striping.
18-acre laydown yard
The 4.2MW WTG foundations have 650 CY of concrete and 52T rebar each.
The 2.5MW foundations have 390CY of concrete and 41 T of rebar each
Erosion control measure installation and maintenance.
WTG erection
Restoration
The Challenge
Due to the project’s geographic location, there is a limited supply of the crushed limestone subbase that is traditionally used in the access road designs. The civil works were scheduled as a two-season task, with winter conditions dictating the end of the first season.
The Result
The Wesson Group worked with the project team to develop an alternate access road design utilizing locally sourced materials. The Wesson Group worked with the owner and regulatory agencies to develop a winter stabilization plan to meet the erosion control requirements for the project.
