The Details

The new MVHS Wynn Hospital in downtown Utica, NY, was a new hospital construction project to replace Utica’s two aging existing hospitals. The new 700,000-SF facility is 10 stories and also includes a new central utility plant, with various surrounding infrastructure upgrades such as new parking lots constructed during The Wesson Group’s involvement in the project.

Scope of Work

  • Backfill of foundations from existing building demolition

  • Site grading and the installation of the subbase working pad

  • Excavation and backfill of foundation elements

  • Installation of underslab electrical and plumbing

  • Demolition of select existing public utilities

  • Central utility plan upgrades including subgrade preparation and micropile foundations for plant equipment, along with all underslab MEP excavation and backfill

  • Parking lot installation and drainage infrastructure

The Challenge

The MVHS hospital project was a fast-paced design-build project that required exceptional teaming between Gilbane and their subcontractors to develop solutions for differing site conditions and design challenges.

The existing site conditions on this urban site development project were challenging with respect to potentially contaminated soil, worker safety and working around the general public.

The project was a very compact and busy site, with numerous subcontractors working in close proximity to each other.

The Result

The Wesson Group on-site team included professional engineers who could provide Gilbane design guidance for addressing differing site conditions to minimize schedule and budget impacts.

The Wesson Group developed an intricate 3D model of each of our foundation excavations and utilized state-of-the-art excavation technologies to accommodate the design and incorporate all OSHA excavation requirements to ensure worker safety.

As a result of constant communication between the site team and other subcontractors, The Wesson Group was able to complete our scope of work on time without impacting the numerous follow-on work that relied on our success, all while maintaining a safe and high-quality site for this complex urban site.
