The Details

The Roaring Brook Wind Farm was constructed in Martinsburg, Lewis County, New York.  The 79.7MW wind farm is comprised of 20 wind turbines. The wind turbines consisted of 5 Gamesa G114 2.6MW turbines and 15 Siemens Gamesa SG145 4.5MW turbines, the first of their configuration installed in North America. This was a comprehensive wind power construction project that leveraged expertise and experience at the heart of The Wesson Group's history; full EPC Contract, project requirements included design, permitting, roadways, foundations, above- and below-ground medium-voltage collection and high-voltage substation construction. TWG returned to Lewis County, where they constructed their first wind farm, for this project. This project was recognized by North American Clean Energy and featured in the November 2022 Magazine Issue.

Scope of Work

  • 72,000 linear feet of access roads and 20 wind turbine foundations

  • 34.5 kV collection to substation transformed to 230 kV at Point of Interconnect

  • 60,000 LF MV cable and 71,000 LF fiber-optic cable for two underground collection circuits

  • 6 miles of overhead collection line with 135 structures

  • 3 wind turbine foundation designs

  • 180,000 tons of subbase placed for access roads, crane pads, laydown yard, and radii

  • 1,600,000 pounds of rebar procured and installed

  • 14,000 cubic yards concrete procured and installed

  • 40,000 cubic yards backfill material placed

  • 100 acres trees cleared and grubbed

  • WTG erection

  • Design and construction of the operations & maintenance facility

  • Sitewide erosion control best management practices

  • Daily on-site safety management

The Challenge

This was a full EPC project located in an extremely environmentally sensitive area. Preserving the NYSDEC and USACE wetlands on this project was paramount. The project also had a large 6 miles portion of overhead collection through many land locked areas within sensitive wetlands. Another major challenge was working with the new Siemens Gamesa G145 Turbine model. This was the first installation in North America of this specific configuration of this turbine, with multiple revisions to the specifications as the turbines were constructed.

The Result

Coordination with stakeholders was key to the success of this project. The project was constructed on schedule, on budget, with quality, safety, and environmental stewardship. There were no contraventions of water quality documentation on this project. The challenges relative to the new tower model and OEM multiple specification revisions were overcome and the towers were successfully mechanically completed and commissioned. A transparent team environment geared at solving problems as they arose, was fostered by The Wesson Group and was paramount to the success of the project.
